History of The Ship's Wheel
by Kenneth Gavins, PM, PDEO, PDDGM

The Ship's Wheel was created and designed for Gaston G. Allen Lodge #629 at my request in 1976 by the Master-Elect of Service Lodge #658, Bernard L. Stark.  During a conversation with him, I remarked that Allen Lodge needed something to identify the Lodge, perhaps a lapel pin.

Working with Worshipful Brother Stark, then Senior Warden, this design was created in the form of a Ship's Wheel, this being appropriate due to the fact that, through research, it was found that Worshipful Brother Gaston G. Allen was a ship's carpenter by trade and by

this design all of the working tools pertaining to Masonry could be placed between the spokes of the wheel and the Square and Compasses in the center.

On November 11, 1976, at my installation as Master of Gaston G. Allen Lodge #629, Brother Bernard L. Stark presented the original design of the Ship's Wheel to the Lodge.  In 1977 the Lodge voted to have lapel pins made from that design.

I believe that the Lodge should also recognize Brother Neil H. Thorkelson for printing the final design before the pins were made.  Without his contribution, this would not have been possible.  Brother Thorkelson served as Junior Deacon in 1977.
